The definition seems to slide in every way at once thus seemingly muddling its clarity. Many cultures and societies and sub-cultures have adopted the term \"necromancy\" as the title of their practice, which is not necessarily wrong, but it has caused confusion for the etymologically-minded who tend to be quick to point a finger at things which do not fit the strict definition of \"corpse divination\" as it might appear to their modern standards\n
\nNecromancy's etymology comes from two Greek words. \"Nekros\" which means\"corpse\" and \"manteia\" which means \"prophesy\". Despite these roots though, we must remember a fact about the nature of dictionaries which is most poignantly brought out by Jorge Luis Borges in the prologue to \"El otro, el mismo\". He cleverly noted that \"It is often forgotten that [dictionaries] are artificial repositories, put together well after the languages they define. The roots of language are irrational and of a magical nature.\" It is difficult, and indeed often impossible, for the modern occultist to look at a dictionary as their source of information about the nature of a practice. \"Necromancy means spirit divination!\" they shout. Delving into case examples, both modern and historical, gives us quite a different picture though.
Distinct forms from different cultures have perpetually arisen throughout the ages. This can be seen clearly in the superstitions and rites of Voodoo, the pompous forms and diagrams of medieval European necromancy, the old Middle-Eastern legends of the living dead, the wards and charms used by central Europe, Egyptian rites of passage beyond the grave, and also simply information passed on as stories or family tales. Some necromancers perform little more than glorified mediumism. They are spiritists and have no interest in the extensible powers related to soul manipulation.These typically retreat back to the realm of new age divination though as they are not welcomed by diviner nor necromancer by virtue of their short-sightedness. Other necromancers are simply interested in hexcraft and all but ignore the divinatory aspects. These, while not shunned, have been traditionally kept at arm's length so as to avoid being caught in thanatoic cross-fire. The soul manipulator seeks only to learn the powers of manipulating the soul and studying the interaction between soul and the material plane. In general, it is an acceptable enough practice in itself but has an uncanny tendency to bring practitioners into conflict with those of any other path.There are also many other types of practitioner, yet it would be fruitless to mention all of them here. Suffice it to say that the necromantic tradition has found itself mirrored in a thousand fragment, each with their own gifts, rationales, andmethods.
The idea of physical reanimation of the dead itself has only died out within the last four hundred years or so, which has significantly impacted the philosophy of the necromancer. In general, the resurrections which make necromancy so infamous are either the summoning of a geist, or the creation of an immaterial egregore or artificial servitor. The basis for the emergence and survival of this idea has been the tendency in occultism to speak of thought-forms. Experiments and tortures involving sensory deprivation show quite clearly that humans are biologically reliant on the ability to comprehend our surroundings. As for the unknown -- this is the very core of the human fear of death and darkness. It is ingrained in us at the evolutionary level to desire self-preservation, through nerves and through hunger. Our psychological fears include heights, loud noises, and that which is not understood. These are simple biological mechanisms which have helped the human race survive as long as it has in an adverse environment. These fears can also be exploited through spellcraft and hypnosis.
\n-METHODS OF INTERACTION WITH SPIRITS-\n
1. Lucid Dreaming -- If you have chosen to use this method of interaction, have you had enough success in controlling the nature of your dreamscape? Does the lucid dreaming method render visions which are meaningful or are they simply dreams?\n
2. Interpretation -- Are the impulses received from those denizens of the realm of the dead apparent and intelligible correspondences? Are these messages characteristic of the spirit in question? Is the chair spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise? All of these are important considerations.
\n3. Possession -- Do you possess enough confidence and skill at summoning spirits to continue to do so until one resides in you? Is your concentration sufficient to undertake this task? Are you capable of retaining some memory of the events which transpire, or do you have a witness or other method in which to record the event? Be advised, such methodologies are often fatal and primarily used by the Cult of Nar-Sie. I cannot advise this approach except in the most dire of circumstances.\n
The history and methods within are only a tiny scratching at the surface of the Art. It is, ultimately, an incredibly varied and rewarding practice. One of the attributes that has set the necromancer apart from many other types of spell weaver is their respect for order, balance, precision, diligent study, discernment, and timing. Knowing the use of these skills will exact a cost makes one mindful of carefully timing, preparing for, anticipating, and selecting each spell with utmost precision. The frozen touch of death is a power beyond simple human comprehension -- so vast that a lifetime of study is barely as significant as dipping one's finger into the ocean. The art can bring knowledge of the nature of the soul, the power to manipulate it, and the ability to cause change in accordance with one's will through the rending of the spirit and whispers of geists, but carries hazards of its own. Do not fear death, but certainly respect it as a force so dreadfully powerful that its black fires could consume all of humanity in thanatoic holocaust and still be unquenched. As surely as we are born, live, and die to crumble back to the dust from which we were wrought, necromantic power is every bit as potent as the healing arts and every bit as damning to those who would attempt to misuse it.
